In my limited experience, before I put rings in my engine, I noticed that mine would really start to smoke once it reach operating temperature, but it would smoke only a little bit while it was warming up. The smoking would coincide with the oil pressure dropping to - really low. The transition from kinda smokey to mosquito control mode was very quick, usually after warming up for about 10-15 minutes.
I assume it was because at temperature the oil was thinner and flowing past the rings easier and burning up. I don't really know why it seemed to be a quick transition, as opposed to gradual as the temp changed, but maybe it was just my interpretation.
I don't know about running it as you describe, but you might want to make sure it gets warm and see if the smoking changes before you put the body on.
