"Model 85" Heater (D300)

This heater has a cover on the front that's held on with two simple snap clasps like on luggage or equipment cases. Pretty neat, except when I take it off, I still can't get to anything. There's more sheet metal between the removable cover and the heater core (I need to get to the valve to unstick the control cable), and as much as I pry and pull, none of it comes apart. It appears be all spot-welded together. Anybody know how to get this kind of heater apart?
