You're right, you could stand right next to it and carry on a conversation in a normal voice. I think most of the noise with a shop air compressor comes from the unmuffled intake port. I forgot to ask where the intake is for these big ones, but it's not in the machine room. Of course there's also the massively thick cast iron cylinders with water jackets around them, and then more cast iron and the whole machine is grouted as well as bolted to a heavy concrete footing. There's really no discernible vibration. Did you notice it got quieter once the unloader kicked out and it started making air at full power? A three phase motor ensures smooth torque, and the two pistons work on both strokes. It's not as quiet as a modern screw compressor, but I like the sound of the pistons because it makes it sound like it's doing work.
