Every time with every vehicle that I thought it was the water pump not pumping, it turned out to be something else. And I've never seen a water pump that appeared good from the outside, but the impeller didn't turn or had disintegrated. Can't say it can't happen, but I've never seen it. Along with the usual causes like clogged radiator and stuck thermostat, a leaky head gasket or timing that is way off will also cause overheating.
