Overheating - how about water pump?

It warmed up here (17deg), so I went back to the radiator issue. I ran it for a while and the top of the radiator was hot, the bottom warmish. But when running it I noticed a rattling sound which I think is coming from the water pump. I pumped some grease into the zerk on the pump, but this didn't appear to change the sound. It doesn't wobble and seems to turn freely. So I'm wondering about the failure of a water pump - how do they go bad? Do they get noisy, or just seize? Marbles bounding around a usual sound?

Could a pump which outwardly appears to work be not moving water, causing the overheating?

Thanks,
Don
