My recollection is that 1100-16/5.83 is comparable to 900-16/4.89, which is what I have in my truck. My engine is turning at 2500 rpm at about 53-55 mph, which is about as fast as I take it. Others have said that stock 230/251 engines are good to at least 3000 rpm, but I rarely push mine that fast, and only then when upshifting.

Autometer makes a nice little 0-4000rpm tach, I bought one years ago and really like it. One fun little feature is that the tach and speedo hands parallel each other when I'm in 4th gear, which helps figure my speed because my speedo tends to wander around the dial at highway speeds.
