... is they're only efficient at one optimum speed and power level. That's great for airplanes that spend most of their time at cruising speed and for electrical generators that always run at one precise RPM and peak power, but it's lousy for motor vehicles. Put another way, their torque/rpm curve is way narrower than that of a piston engine.
