That is not true. I have had 6 Vettes pre 84, all were in the C3 Era. The power steering is different from the norm. You still had the solid mechanical steering shaft to the steering box. Then there is a small hydraulic control box which is also operated off the pitman arm/rod on the steering box. This control box controls hydraulic flow for power steering.

You can take a axe and chop the ps hoses, remove the PS Pump, take the belt off the PS pump........and you still have absolute mechanical steering.

Dont think for a second that Corvettes had true hydraulic steering at 160 mph +

Borgenson now makes a complete upgrade system that uses a (guess what) Saginaw PS Box that replaces the original C3 Corvette system. The Borgenson system is also available for C4's
