chirripo is the highest and i have heard that it does but is quite rare never any on the ground to speak of

Probably the closest thing to real snow was when the country’s soccer team got “snowed” 1-0 in its match against the U.S. Men’s National Team back in March. The game took place in Denver, Colorado despite blizzard-like conditions.

Costa Ricans are not use to snow. The reports of snow falling in Costa Rica at higher altitudes are really nothing more than ice pellets or snow grains, not real snow. At times this occurs at higher elevations like The Cerro de la Muerte, which the highest point in the Costa Rican section of the Pan-American Highway, or atop some of the country’s volcanos.

Most recently the news of snow falling at the top of Irazú Volcano that spread through the social media was grossly exaggerated. According to the country’s national weather service (el Instituto Meteorológico Nacional or IMN), this phenomenon was caused by a large hailstorm (una granizada) and was not snow. A spokesman from the Institute stated, “Due to Costa Rica’s geographical position near the equator and the elevation of the country’s mountains the conditions for snowfall do not exist.”
