But what are the axle diameters between the two? The cost to do the same process to the bigger axle make not make it worth doing.
It could also be not that the splined ends make it stronger but that they can make the whole shaft stronger, i.e. they are using a different metal, or having them treated such that they are stronger, and it can't be done on or isn't as necessary on the smaller shafts.
It's all speculation without more info though. Would be interesting to pick one of the powertrain engineers brains though.
