as the lighter duty(still tandems but with 34000 lb. rear bogies) mack trucks come with formed flanges where as the 44s 55s etc. all come with double splines which tells me the engineers for super duty like those better

one of the reasons being as you mention but why not
make em all that way if that was the case especially if it was cheaper

my guess is they may be less likely to break but i am guessing

wonder how many b61s 44s with 17(course spline, ours are 16) dual splined axles
ever broke

i see now they are 41 spline but still dual splined on the heavier duty bogies 34s 38s 44s and 55s are all tandems but only the lighter ones come with formed flanges
