Oil IS the best way to store energy. Nature makes it in more than one way. One way takes 365 million years and one takes 365 days.
Your question about manufacturing solar panels is a fair one. Solar panels will still come out ahead. There is also a bunch of infrastructure that goes into drilling wells and refineries in addition to the energy, but the real difference is the sun. Every time we find new ways to get energy from the sun in real time, we will come out ahead. That includes wind, wave, hydro, etc., because the sun is ultimately powering all of those things.
