They've become more popular with the racing crowd too. Lots of aftermarket turbo and supercharger kits using them for air-water intercooler loops. Even saw one on a new factory turbo car the other day too.
Hell the new USS Ford Aircraft carrier is using far more electric motors for pumping duties previously performed using steam. Far simpler, more efficient, and compact.
