It's not as bad as it looks since it is on a curve. It would be worse on a flat spot. Just don't beat the metal to death. You don't want to thin the metal. Work off dolly. In other words, supporting the metal but not directly beneath the hammer strike.
You will probably have to shrink the metal. Have an experienced person show you how and where to shrink.
I think putting in a patch piece will be more work. Save that for after you mess everything up ;).
Make templates from the opposite side to guide you so you don't push it out too far.
