Yes, my argument has always been that it's more about perception. Most people go after a Toyota/Honda because they're supposed to be reliable and last a long time. So they go in with the mindset of taking care of it and keeping it. While your average American small car was seen as disposable by most people and were usually poorly maintained.

My sister had a 94 Plymouth Sundance, basically the same car, same engine, but with the manual. Even though it should have been more reliable because I'm religious about maintenance and she's not hers died long before mine did.
