It's being used in many places in So. Cal. I think it is the future of plumbing in residential plumbing. All major codes approve it.
PEX will probably last better than copper, but we won't know for sure for several decades. One disadvantage is that it can't be left exposed to the sun.
If you are doing just a small job or repair and are used to working with copper, stick with copper.
