I don't know the state of your starter, but I spent $65 at the alternator/starter shop and it made a big difference. It was somewhat hit-or-miss before I took it in there, but once done it was a new motor.
Hopefully it's just a cable/tight engine. Mine really loosened up the more I cranked it. I assume it was the super-sticky startup lube I put in there getting washed out with out and things falling into place generally.
