Those places re-cast a new rim onto the old wire frame and hub. Nice, but as you say, expensive. Might be reasonable if you are restoring a nice car, but not so much for a run-of-the-mill FFPW.
I found the epoxy trick worked pretty well and was not that hard to do. Finding an epoxy with the right consistency, liquid enough to stick, but firm enough to hold shape, is the key.
Hopefully, you only have to fix deep cracks and a few missing pieces. Recreating the whole wheel would be difficult using epoxy.
