Make sure you have a filter on the intake to the spray booth to keep any dust from being sucked in. Also put filters on the output from spray booth. Make sure that you are catching the paint particles and fumes. The fumes can usually be caught by a charcoal filter.

My friend wo runs a shop has an open spray booth. The back wall is nothing but filters with several fans behind them to create an air flow from the painting area into the filters. You can stand near the car being painted and not smell any fumes. Kind of a neat setup. The ceiling is slightly sloped to enhance air flow into the filters. You look at the filters and can see the colors he has sprayed. Even with HVLP you get some overspray. He does wear an air supply while spraying. He does not seem to have issues with dust as it is his clean shop bay that is used for painting and storage is cars and supplies. All body and mechanical work seem to take place in his other shop bay.
