someone here pointed out once that one of the John Deere 4 cylinder diesels is good for over 3000 rpms consistently if I remember correctly. But the Cummins are easy to come up with at a decent price and Dodge and Cummins are synonymous now and it ads value to the truck. putting in a john deere would probably not be as appealing were you to ever sell. Eventually I always sell so that is a factor in whatever I put together.
