It was the Marines that "traded" them for equipment back in the mid 1990s. We did not have the money to buy equipment like our bigger and better funded sister services. The loop hole the Marines used for the trade was closed after the deal. The Hummers were the older ones that were on our prepositioned ships. We also trade some trucks also, but the big item was the Hummers.
One more note on the Hummers the Marines released, I was talking to a guy who got one, and he was telling me how his was vandalized by some one punching holes in the floor boards. I told him it was Marines who punched the holes in the floor boards. We were told to take our pick axes, and punch holes in the floor boards of the hummer so water could drain out. Easy fix to drain the water, that is how we operated.
