I saw a documentary showing how they kept their old cars going. Many small and garage shops doing specialty repair. They have trouble getting steel, and have to show the government that it's been obtained from scrap and not imported. One man was a wizard at making grills and chroming them.

One segment showed a man who ground up old brake pads, then mixed in resin or glue and poured the concoction into a mold to form new pads. The camera crew gave him a dist mask as a gift and wished him good luck with his health.
