I used a large scour pad that I got at the local paint store (house paint) and lacquer thinner. You want the surface free of dust or grease. My heat gun made the material adhere better to the surface, by pre-heating the metal and then going over after it's applied. This was especially helpful on the interior side of the cab roof.
But don't expect any miracles....the truck will still be noisy.
