80 grit, the metal needs a bight. Anything less and you need to use acid etch primer or a real good epoxy and even then the epoxy will not stick as well as you like.

(1) sand
(2) wipe down with metal prep
(3) acid and grease remover
(4) primer
(5) two part high build primer filler
(6) take a break as long as you can before sanding the primer filler
