Wasn't it also understood, back when they were made, that they'd need an overhaul every 40,000 miles. We have old trucks that were never overhauled, at least not in modern times, and then driven until something gave out. I don't think the head gasket is a known weakness in those engines, any more than a bent rod or a cracked block would be. They don't seem to have any one thing that always fails first, so I guess it's a good design. But they did plan on them getting overhauled regularly, which of course any gas station garage mechanic could do for a couple hundred bucks back in the '50s.
