The crazy lady with the knife. As I recall, there weren't even any people around except for the cops, so they can't say she was really endangering anyone. They could have surrounded her at a safe distance and waited until she calmed down.

We had a situation in Wallace a few years ago where a guy was cornered in the middle of downtown with a shotgun in hand. This was the end of a lengthy high-speed chase on I-90 and around the streets of Wallace. They got the guy boxed in, a crowd had gathered, he got out of the car acting crazy and threatening to shoot himself. At least one sharpshooter had a rifle pointed at him and would have been perfectly justified in shooting him dead. He had the shotgun pointed up at his own head. Instead of shooting him, while he was distracted by the cops in front of him, one of the bigger deputies snuck around behind him and tackled him to the ground. He pulled the trigger the moment he was tackled, but the gun was still pointed up and he even lucked out and missed himself. They had him hog-tied within seconds, and nobody was hurt. All this with a crowd standing around and ladies getting hysterical.

If $35,000/yr small-town cops can resolve a situation like this without anyone getting hurt, why do the $100K+ big-city cops have to be so trigger-happy, shooting people "brandishing" a cell phone or a knife at a long distance? Most recently some guy armed with absolutely nothing and doing nothing threatening was shot dead in the stairway of a housing project back east by some nervous cop.
