The LDT/LDS series doesn't meet California smog, if that's what you mean. Thermodynamically, it's a diesel engine. According to the manual, fuel consumption is about .5 lbs/BHP-hr, if that means anything to you in comparison with gas engines or modern diesels.
At 15-20K GVW, I get 6-8 mpg on the highway, which isn't great and isn't horrible. I doubt much of that is the engine's fault, though. I'm spinning 85/140 gear oil in 3 double-reduction differentials, a transmission, and a transfer case, at all times, my tires are rarely very well matched, and there's no inter-axle differential in the rear. Plus it has the all the streamlining of a small house.
