The extra weigh of a heavy engine over the front axle not figured for the weight removes what you can carry in the back. They designed these trucks for a set load over the front axle and made the springs for it. This gave them extra spring load to carry stuff. The load from a 5.9 diesel is way more than the 6 cylinder and uses that up. To add that much weight on the front axle with just a load in the bed would be a lot in the bed to transfer the weight to the front axle. That is why you would want to add springs to offset this extra weight and still have the GVWR of the truck the same.
