I've pics of assembly line workers with 2x4 blocks. Though on later cars, and I think the door frame gives first, later stuff has heavy hinges.
I suspect the engineers designed them that way. Lots quicker than trial and error shimming. And all the doors I've pulled had pretsticulated hinges.
