At least the way you did it, you don't have to buy $300 batteries every five years.
Twelve volt wiper motors are fairly easy to find. In the days of the tar top batteries, it would have been fairly easy to rig up a six volt tap.
I remember a battery checker that you could push through the tar top so you could check individual cells.
