You do not have to have a pressurized system for the coolant to be sucked back into the radiator from the overflow tank. All you need is a good seal between the cap and the radiator filler neck. The overflow tank is mearly an extension of the upper radiator tank, remotely located, and connected via overflow tube.

When I check the coolant level in the radiator, it is always up to the overflow tube, hot or cold. If it is lower, this tells me I need a new cap or gasket because the cap is letting air get sucked into the radiator instead of coolant from the overflow tank. Knowing that I have a good cap, I very seldom remove it to check the radiator. This keeps the gasket in good shape and sealing longer. Instead, I check at the overflow tank. The level in it varies by about 2 to 4 inches between cold and hot. Because this is a non-pressurized system, either cap can be removed while the coolant is hot. However, I do exercise caution in doing so. (And, I may receive some flack from readers for doing so.)

In my original post on the subject I mentioned in haste that all of my WDX's have had non-pressurized cooling systems. Actually, none of the eight WDX-WM300 style Power Wagons that I have owned have ever had pressurized systems. All have been from the years of 1946 thru 1956.
