M37 PTO Interchangability

I've been told that any M37 power take-off can be used on either the original NP88950 or the B1 series NP420 transmissions. The below quote, from TM 9-8030 C-8 (Change No. 8) of 5 May 1965 indicates this is not the case.

However, people have swapped these PTO's between the two transmissions, apparently without any problem.

Comments, please, and also - how d you tell the difference in the two PTO's? I see no markings on mine. Are the idlers available?

"Power take-off assembly 2520-630-0902, is used with transmission assembly 2520-975-7081 on M37B1, M43B1, M53B1, M56B1, M56C, and M201B vehicles. Power take-off assembly 2520-737-4903, is used with transmission assembly 2520-741-2496 on M37, M43, and M201 vehicles. To use power take-off, 2520-630-0902, with transmission 2520-741-2496, remove idler gear 2520-630-3077 from power take-off and install idler gear 2520-737-4902. To use power take-off, 2520-737-4903, with transmission 2520-975-7081, remove idler gear 2520-737-4902 from power take-off and install idler gear 2520-630-3077."
