SM 420's go back to 1947 if I remember correctly. I have one in my Carryall and it is quite good.

Parts are available for it. I did not have any problems. Mine had a lot of rust on a couple of gears. I tried to buy new ones and found them to be expensive. Then someone told me about a place in Seattle that could help. They said they could sell me the parts but asked if I would be interested in replacing the entire gear set. I said yes. They have Gama Gote transmissions which are SM 420s in a different case. They took the internals from the gamma gote and put it in a standard SM 420 case. When I got it home I realized that that they had not used my original transmission case but the cover was mine. They replaced my case with a later version which is stronger and possible a larger lower shaft. The gears were unused and you could clearly see the machine marks on them. It has been a great transmission and I have been really pleased. The cost was not bad at all. I got the whole thing for about $100 more than it would have been to buy just the 2 gears.
