been a while since i shipped LTL or UPS regularly, but if paletized, make sure contents are well inside the pallet, secure and identified not to top load. this will not neccisarily stop dammage, but may help. If not palletized, dammage is almost garenteed. i'd gotten to where i'd palletize everything that went on a common carrier ( truck).

If i recal UPS required a considerable amount of packing material around contents,do not reacall for sure, but minimim of 4 inches comes to mind. package is expected to survive a 4 ft drop. one of my home grown packaging tests was to push a potential new package off the dock in a variety of positions, then see if contents survived. also used to send test packages so that they would be handled by the UPS terminal in TN ( do not remember city,, knoxville??) from my experience, this terminal was very abusive to packages.

i tried to ship a lower 2x4 civi grille portion to a fella in WI a year or so ago, bubble wrapped and streach wrapped the thing thouroughly. packing matls cost more than i asked for the part. Part was returned crushed, UPS told me packaging was not sufficient therefor they were not liable ( like that was a suprize) ...after years in shipping i should have known better than to try shipping in that manner..

Known many people who worked for a variety of carriers ,, stories they tell about the way packages are handled are most concerning, as with many industries today, volume is all important,,, quality a very distant second...

i'd suggest when packing your shipment to pack it as if it is to be handled by people who do dot give a rat's "#@$" if it arrives in one peice or not, and are likely to take out frustrations with there employer on your package..
