I recently bought a 2001 2500 with HO diesel and six speed. I struggled with the question you are considering, and finally elected to go with the 3.55 gears.
Shortly after receiving the truck I fitted it with 255-85-16 tires, which are approximately a 33 inch diameter.
It works great, and would do it again....
