I have 3:54s in my 99 Diesel 4by4 with the 5 speed. I have had NO problems towing any of my power wagons. I just got 20 mpg twice in a row. I was amazed, I was complaining about the bad mileage before. I have 15,000 miles on it. Unless your going to tow a lot I'd go with the 3:54s. If I was going to buy another and never was going to tow or use it for work I would order 3:00 . but that isn't practile
