Don't rely on friends of friends advise when it comes to paintshops. I wish I could afford $6,000 paint jobs on my clunkers. I had a 66 Coronet painted by Maaco during one of their winter specials ($149), had the car for 4 years and was very pleased with the quality. It was 2-tone cream & brown. The car was not garaged after painting and looked great after 4 years when I regretfully sold it. No peeling, fading, or wear. Seriously... It Looked Great! I did some of the prep by removing the bumpers, handles, trim, and basicly anything that would otherwise have been taped by the prep guys, before taking it to the shop (left the window glass in on this one). I hate seeing tape/color lines and spray on parts that shouldn't be painted. They did the sanding, light nick and scratch smoothing, primer, and paint. I think it was enamel... next I'll try urathane. My specialty was lacquer. I am planning on doing the body & prep work on my B-4-PW and having it sprayed Original Dodge Green at either Maaco or Miracle. I've checked out an Earl Sheib locally and I don't care for this particular shop. I'm sure others are probably O.K. Fortunately the inside of my PW is already green so I don't need to do underhood, interior or door jams. I will be removing all handles, moldings, weatherstripping, and glass to get everything red (ex-firetruck) changed to green. I will supply the paint and they always knock off a few bucks for that. It will probably cost $200-$250 with todays rates. From what I remember they never can quite get the colors right to my liking unless I supply the paint. They always seem to hit the primary colors but have difficulty getting the factory original just right. They're close... but who wants close. I do agree with one earlier post... It's 90%(+) prep, so you decide. Prep it yourself and save, pay by the hour to prep, or live with tape marks/color lines/& overspray. Oh yea... I've painted 3 cars/trucks from ground up and enjoyed every minute/hour/day/week of it! It's a long...long...process without the right equipment that you find in a shop! Thanks!
