My back yard has a long slight uphill grade. I park the truck at the bottom, unspool the winch cable and stretch it out up the hill. I hook a 20 foot chain to the end of the cable and attach the end of the chain to a big oak tree. Then I start the truck and winch it uphill. The cable will wrap itself up perfectly without any need to guide it on to the spool. Using the chain on the end of the cable lets the cable move side to side on the drum when you get near the end of the cable.
