When I bought this capstan winch from Randy Baker I cleaned up the shaft with emery cloth so the clutch would slide easily. It seemed to help but was still a little sticky. I have used the winch several times and each time the clutch seemed to get worse. I finally had to pry it in and out with a small bar. Yesterday I slid the cable drum aside and used a large file while the winch shaft was turning to smooth the shaft. It was sort of like the winch became a lathe. It seems the key ways had some slight edges that the emery cloth wouldn't take care of. Now it' as smooth as glass. Ready for the new cable when it arrives. Of course this was easier because the extra long shaft allowed me to slide the drum aside instead of removing it.
