In your picture the PW should be loaded the other way. As loaded, the majority of the PWs weight is behind the trailers center of gravity. The fact that the back of the pick up is still riding high and not squatting down indicates that there is very little tongue weight. I would suspect that the trailer swayed quite a bit.

I bet that you not only exceeded the GVW of the trailer but also the GCVW and max towing capacity of the truck. The 2004 Dakota Quad cab 4 X 4 with the large V8 and manual trans has a max tow rating of 5850lbs and a GCVW of 10,500 lbs. The smaller V8 or V6 and auto trans versions have significantly lower ratings. The PW is 5k without the bed. The trailer is 2210lbs according to UHaul. You do the math.
