The "generator" is also a rebuild part. It's the tube with a needle valve in the end of it that gets hot and vaporizes the liquid gas. The part that goes bad is the needle valve, which prevents you from shutting the lantern completely off.

But if it won't stay lit, the first question is "does it have a big enough flame"? If it does, the next question is "Is the mixture right?" Too rich and it will smoke and soot up the mantle and chimney. Too lean and it will go out. There is no adjustment, like you find on an old gas range, but I'm sure things could get clogged up and mess up the mixture in either direction. If the pump pumps, I suspect a thorough cleaning is all that's needed to get it working right. I have several, including one really old one that's all brass with a big sheet of mica for the window, and they can sometimes be a little finicky. I keep them, but they're no good for traveling because vibrations of the road always make the mantle crumble, and for emergency lighting at home I prefer Aladdin lamps, which are kerosene lamps that use a mantle to provide good bright light. They don't hiss or require any pumping, and there's less explosion hazard.
