Jammed tranny, kind of OT

Any idea what could cause a simple straight-cut tranny to jam when all the shift rails are in the "neutral" position. This is on my old D4 cat. Was pushing some rocks and suddenly "pop", and the engine tried to die. It happened once before but after various jimmying of the shift knob I got it to work, and didn't think any more about it. This time, no luck. I can disengage both steering clutches and yet when I engage the flywheel clutch, it tries to kill the engine. I took the shift tower off and what I could see (not much) looked fine. I can work the 3 shift rails back and forth by hand and they pop into position like they should. I was sure I'd find something worn-out or stripped, but all is clean and shiny and good. The next step is to remove the transmission cover, but on an old cat that's a huge piece of work because the whole machine, except for the engine, is defined as the "transmission" and one cover covers it all -- so cab, seat, floor, controls, tank, etc all have to come off first.
