Hi, Milo,
I recently made a bed for my WDX out of inexpensive pine material. I did this so that I could use them later as a pattern when I replace them with white oak. It was a lot of work but I now have a template to use for the real thing and I have a serviceable bed in the meantime. I found that I needed to make the boards thinner than the original 3/4 inch in order for them to have a chance of fitting between the angles and the flanges around the wheel wells. I also had to bevel the edges to help them fit to the full depth of the sheet metal without excessive pounding to get them in place. Obviously, pine is a lot softer than the oak will be so I wanted to have all of the fitting worked out ahead of time. It was also nice to be able to make all my mistakes on the cheap stuff! Hope this helps!
Dave
