Basically anything over 10001 Be it GVW or GCVW. May be a regulation vs. enforcement issue....

The way it was initially explained to me by a neighbor going through it on his newer Ford farm truck is that if you NEVER pull a trailer behind your 3/4 or 1 ton, then it's not an issue. If your 3/4 ton has a GVW of 8,800 lbs and you throw and empty trailer behind it then you are over 10000 lbs and you need DOT numbers etc.... I did speak with someone in our local DMV and she said that as long as I am NOT engaged in commerce as a taxable business endeavor or do NOT write off any part of my expense associated with the hauling, that I do not need to mess with any of the commercial requirements as long as I am below my declared total weight of 16,000 lbs. If I am stopped and cited, then I need to take it up with the judge.
