Seems like as good a measurement as many to me. Out in the big ranch country they measure distance by "looks" -- If you look as far as you can see and then go over there and look as far as you can see again, you've gone 2 looks. Any real ranch has to be a couple of looks across. They measure rainfall in inches, but not quite the same as people on the wet side of the mountains. A "2 inch rainfall", for example, means the raindrop craters in the dust were 2" apart when the storm was over.
