They are metal. I liked that. But if I regularly store gas in them, they flex in and out due to temp and pressure changes and eventually fail. They fatigue and start weeping fuel at the crack. I've had it happen to 6 different cans now(2 Gerry, 4 NATO) over the past 30 years. The last one just started leaking last week after I filled it up. I can check the NATO cans to see if they all cracked in a similar location. The Gerry cans are long gone(funny enough they were stolen, cracks and all).

I have some plastic cans that are 20 years old that are still usable. They didn't ever rust and they didn't fail from fatigue either. There can be other issues with them but I'm now a believer in a high quality plastic fuel can being superior for long term use than the metal cans built in the form of the Gerry and NATO cans.
