When you have heard it all....this beats all of them.

Jeep had had a recall on a tremendous number of Cherokees and Grand Cherokees for possible accident damage and fire involving a ruptured fuel tank in a rear ender. The fix Jeep agreed to was to add a rear Trailer Receiver Hitch, thus adding more steel between the bumper and fuel tank.

I have been on the wait list since about this time last year as they had to have a tremendous number of Receiver Hitches built. From memory, the number effected approaches a million jeeps. I finally get the word to call my Jeep dealer and make arrangements to have the recall attended to. My appointment was 8am this morning.

I am at the Stealership 15 minutes early. The Parts Changer writer says it will take about 1 hour to add the "Protective Steel" for the recall. I ask is the steel the Receiver Hitch.....Hmmmm, Ahh, Hmmmm....we call it protective steel, but it does look like a trailer hitch. Duh ??

About a hour later out comes my Jeep with a Nice new shiny Receiver Hitch, sure looks like a Draw Tite. But there are no weight or class decals on the hitch. I ask the Parts Changer Writer what is the Class or Rating. More...Hmmmm, Ahh, Hmmmm.....He then says Chrysler does not really want this used as a trailer hitch, its just Protective Steel. Duh ?

Its a receiver hitch, nicely built to use existing holes in the frame. Not really worried about a weight rating as it will only be used to pull a little dump trailer.

So I gots "Protective Steel"

Paul
