If the tank was the problem you would never get the gas to run clean, so it is probably the fuel line. To confirm this, run the gas though the rubber line till it runs clean, then let it sit for a time. Run gas through the line again, and if it comes out wonky, the line is the problem.
Bruce has a good idea of running a temp tank and line to the pump, at least to see that the engine runs.
