Wire ok for sheetmetal, but you will need an arc for your frame,. Not to say it can't be done, but in light of your current abilities, it's easier to get the penetration with the arc.
I use a tripod mix of gas that the local gas company makes up. Works well on mild steel.
Clean is the big thing with wire feeds as they typically don't have flux to flow away your "trash" that's probably your big problem with the gate repair you did. No rust, no oils etc. these things cause porosity in your bead, as does no gas( remember to turn gas on:) )
