Stay away from Craigs list. There are good people on Craigs lists, but there are so many flakes it's not worth taking a chance.

Now that every rod shop has seen T.V. programs like Phantom Garage where they charge $100,000 to build a basic Chevy truck that ends up being worth $40,000, they think they can charge outrageous prices.

I would look to join a car club, antique engine club or the like. You can find people who will help you and others who have developed good reputations as mechanics.

Go to car shows and ask who did the work on the cars if it wasn't the owner himself.

Except for paint and body work, do the job yourself even if you have to learn or buy tools. That is what the hobby is about.

If you want to spend money on having work done for you, start with a vehicle that will give you a good chance of recovering most of your money.
